In terms of software, it must have scalable centralized management capability with redundancy feature to complete remote supervisory control and on-site data acquisition without data loss, and has to support open interfaces and Modbus protocol to easily access data and integrate diverse devices as well as providing a wide variety of graphic libraries to represent data via animation in real time. Regarding hardware specifications, supporting Structured Text (ST) language is prerequisite because the company is habitual of using it for programming. Providing backup functions and fast recovery mechanism are also necessary to enhance system reliability.

System Description:

For this wastewater treatment plant project, Advantech provided a total solution that combined WebAccess 8.1 with its APAX-5000 and EKI series products. The installed APAX-5620 RISC-based controller was equipped with various modules for acquiring and delivering digital/analog signals from the four substations to the control center via an EKI-7659C industrial Ethernet switch. The collected data is then displayed using WebAccess, thereby achieving centralized remote monitoring and control management. WebAccess can also be integrated with video cameras or CCTV systems using an EKI-9312P Gigabit PoE switch to support the direct supervision of equipment and facilities.

Advantech’s WebAccess platform offers greater functionality than conventional SCADA systems and delivers a wealth of benefits. As a crucial part of the control and monitoring system, the APAX-5620 module and I/Os offer a maximum response time of 1 ms to ensure efficient handling of local measurements and events. Featuring powerful built-in communication capabilities, APAX-5620 can be used to easily communicate with multiple WebAccess SCADA nodes. Moreover, with installation of two APAX-5620 modules, the backup/redundancy function can be enabled to enhance the system availability.

Finally, by leveraging the X-Ring redundant network protocol and ultra high-speed recovery time (less than 10 ms), EKI-7659C delivers more reliable network communication that ensures timely data delivery.

Effective Water Supply System for Fish Hatchery


Project Description:
Taiwan, surrounded by the sea, has a long history of deep sea fishing, offshore fishing, and coastal aquaculture whose breeding technology is internationally renowned. However, pumping large amounts of groundwater for the traditional practice of artificial feeding causes severe ground subsidence at the southwest coast, and even problems like seawater intrusion in the rainy season. Recently the government actively promoted a policy of seawater breeding rather than freshwater. By planning and building seawater supply facilities in particular production areas, clean seawater can be directed into fish farms. Coupled with advanced technology, water supply systems monitor the watersupply and electrical powerfacilities toensure a steady quality and quantity of water supply. Through theuse of a fiber-optic network and a user-friendly interface, management staff can remotely monitor onsite conditions, ensuring that fish farms maintain in the best conditions for fish breeding.
 
System Requirements:
The process of supplying water is to introduce seawater through penstocks. After precipitation, seawater is pumped to the fish farms. Easy Control Technology, the system integrator responsible for this water-supply and electrical facilities engineering project, building the monitoring andcontrol system, divided the system into four areas: grit chambers, pumps, power systems, and control room. Each area adopts the appropriate hardware, software products, and I/O modules in accordance with the needsof different functions, and acquires digital and analog signals for system monitoring. The monitoring system must use redundant architecture to ensure a stable water supply for protecting the species with high economic value from death of suffocation due to water, power outages, and other issues. At thesame time, one of the necessities is rugged hardware to withstand strong wind, salty and humid conditions, and huge outdoortemperature differences between day and night. Furthermore, in order to maintain transmission quality over a long distance, the project adopts an optical network to provide fast transmission rates and simultaneously reduce noise interference. The switches must also support a specific protocol to facilitate user management. The software must allow onsite management staff and local government to monitor the status of fish production areaall the time, so HMI/SCADA software, with an easy-to-use user interface, is an essential feature of this project.
 
System Overview:
To meet the requirements of Easy Control Technology,Advantech provided the APAX-5620KW programmable automation controller (PAC) with a variety ofAPAX digital and analog I/O modules (including the APAX-5040, APAX-5060, APAX-5017, and APAX-5028), to build a redundant system architecture for monitoring electric gate and grit removal equipment. The same configuration was also used for monitoring the power generator and power distribution panel in the power system. Five APAX products with theAPAX-5013 8-channel RTD module acquired data and control pumps, pressure, water level, flow, electric butterfly valve, etc. For data acquisition and on-site control of these three areas, the core is the APAX-5620KW controller. Its dual-CPU module architecture operates independently, providing high-performance computing and performing input and output control tasks. In addition, the redundant mechanism stores an I/O processing programon the two controllersin two independent systems. The primary controller performs I/O operation, and the standby controller will automatically and quickly take over when the primary controller fails. This unique dual-controller architecture provides excellent reliability for a stable and uninterrupted application. An ATX Motherboard AIMB-781, rack-mountableACP-4000 chassis, and Advantech WebAccess HMI/SCADA software were installed in the central control room of the building. Its easy-to-use user interface provides management staff with dynamic graphics display and real-time data control. The browser-based software also allows local and centralgovernment units to remotely monitor thestatus of aquaculture production area at any time. In addition, Advantech also provided the EKI-4654R and EKI-7659C industrial-grade switches, supporting the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). City Flood Control Systems Get a Powerful IoT Solution

City flood prevention is mainly to prevent the problems of heavy rain. The function of the pump station needs to be combined with the water forecasting system for scheduling the tasks. Even in dry arid countries in the Middle East, storm water management is an essential tool. The local authority in Al Ain, in the UAE started installing advanced storm water management systems in 2012.
The scope of this project was to improve and upgrade the operation, maintenance of storm water networks and pumping stations inthe UAE. This was designed as a two phase project, the first of which was completed in 2012, the second phase ofthe project looked at Phase One and evaluated its efficacy. The conclusion was that phase one had problems that needed to be resolved and in March 2014 ETEK won the contract tobuildStage Two.ETEK is a UAE based technology and integrated solutions provider that delivers a full range of products, services and support to clients within the GCC & Levant region. They provide industrial applications, industrial automation and business applications solutions and focuses on the Water, utilities & IFMS, MES/MIS industrial automation solutions and infrastructure markets.

System Requirements:
Phase One’s problems included the problem of too many integration points that made troubleshooting, maintenance and installation expensive and difficult to manage especially since it could onlybe carried out by from a single location. The lack of joined-up-thinking and coordination caused a problem of having too many licenses for administrators to manage anddevelopment was not user friendly.  Phase Twoof theproject included 13 Storm Water Pumping Stations and at each of them they required controllers, Gateways with 3G/4G modems, SCADA Node Gateways with 3G/4G Modem. It was also essential that these 13 pumping stations could be managed centrally from a single Web basedSCADA system via a 3G/4G data network that would include historical and current alarms, a detailed reporting system, a configurable dashboard, integration with third party CCTV systems.

At each pumping station the following solution was proposed:
An APAX-5522 PE 32 Bit CPU Remote Terminal Unit(RTU) with APAX-5045 12 Ch. DI/DO, APAX-5040PE 24 Ch. DI, APAX-5017PE 12Ch. AI modules to manage the pump and collect information from it. This datais then collected by a compact UNO-2272G Embedded Automation Computer with iDoor technology for 3G/4G Modules and then sent wirelessly to thecontrol center. Each site has a third-party CCTV camera installed and the information such as emergencies, and unauthorized access from this feed is sent to an UNO-2184 embedded automation computervia high speed Ethernet. To manage this data, watch the CCTV camera feed in real time and configure the pumping stations from anywhere, Advantech WebAccess SCADA System 5000 I/O tags was installed on each of the gateways. There are manyadvantages ofWebAccessover the existing SCADA system. Byhaving a centralized system that is able to view, control andconfigure any of the pumps remotely over the Intranet or Internet from any web-browser and mobile operating system, maintenance costs are significantly reduced.  By providing an unlimited number of clients, there is no restriction on the amount of users or devices that can access the system making it easy for new staff to access the system without the need for additionalpurchases. To watch for trends in the usage of the pumpsand to prepareforwear-and-tear on components WebAccess stores the data on anSQL Database which can be used to produce reports from the choice that comepre-installed with the software or can be built by the system integrator to meet specific needs. Since these 13 sites are spread over a wide area it’s incredibly useful if the engineers in the central control room see exactlywhere the pumps are located. Meanwhile, a wide variety and a large amount of equipment with poor interoperability also caused maintenance problems. Because of these issues, the plant planned to upgrade its system using fiber optic communication and a remote monitoring solution to enhance the level of system automation.

Project Implementation:
Advantech’s industrial grade EKI-1521 is a serial device server designed to connect RS-232/422/485 serial devices to an IP-based Ethernet network. When the EKI-1521 receives the incoming serial data from the AIS receiver, this module can send the data to the service providers using the UDP or TCP protocol, and then the information can be forwarded to the clients. The EKI-1521 supports multi-access features which allows the same serial AIS data stream to be distributed via UDP or TCP to up 16 different hosts or service providers. An EKI-1521 is also able to have its firmware quickly updatedvia its easy-use software utility.

System Description:
Advantech provided a remote and centralized monitoring system for this case. The system can be divided into two major parts: on-site data processing and collection, and SCADA/HMI control operation. For on-site data processing and collection, Advantech APAX-5017, APAX-5040, and APAX-5046, I/O modules, are implemented to collect data, and then the EKI-2526S industrial-grade Ethernet switch, is used for data transmission. The APAX-5017, Analog Input Module, is used to collect pH meter and water level data while the APAX-5040, as a Digital Input Module, monitors the status of the water level and pump, and sends the alarm to control center when there’s a malfunction. The APAX-5046, Digital Output Module controls the on/off buttons of the pumps and field devices. All the data is then sent to the compact and robust APAX-5520KW controller, which supports customized waste water treatment functions to develop an entire waste water treatment process, such as: metal, aerating, sludge and scum removal, the killing of bacteria and the removal of waste water residuals. The other support logic control functions are for the pump, motor, valve control and the transferring of the parameters to the control room via an EKI-2525 unmanaged industrial Ethernet switch.
At this data collection stage, fiber-optic communication plays a critical role in enabling the plant to expand its industrial network quickly and cost-effectively because EKI products support high-speed and long-distance transmissions. Meanwhile, with a high performance processor and large storage capability, the APAX-5520KW can act as a standalone controller for controlling I/O modules so as to provide local control features.
For remote management, Advantech provided a TPC-1270 12.1" SVGA LED LCD Celeron M/ Touch Panel Computer, with HMI/SCADA Software and Advantech WebAccess, to display all kinds of data immediately, therefore allowing engineers to remotely tune or manipulate the on-site equipment operations in the control center. The system also provides real-time alarms, historical data analysis, data sharing, automatic report generation, and many other management functions to meet the plant’s monitoring requirements as well as reaching the goal of centralized management and distributed control.

Compared to a traditional copper cable network that was limited to 100 m, optical fiber communication can support a transmission distance of up to 30 km. A Total Solution for Water Supply Plants

Project Introduction:
In modern society, water supply plants play an important role in providing daily and clean water to citizens. Essentially, a water-supply system can be divided into three sections: purification, transmission and consumption. The purification of untreated water ensures the water is safe for a variety of purposes. Distribution reservoirs, often built on top of mountains or in the woods, supplement the water transmission system during peak demands and last are the pipes which deliver the water.

Based on this architecture, the traditional operation of a water supply plant consumed a lot of manpower and resources, because the water treatment process needs an extremely accurate dosing control and the outside apparatuses have to be constantly monitored. Therefore, a total solution with advanced technology and robust equipment to control the treatment process and remotely monitor the situations of devices has become an essential measure of water plant management.

System Requirements
The Gongliao water treatment plant is located in the northeast corner of Taiwan and mainly supplies water to Keelung. Its untreated water comes from the river which must go through a series of water treatment processes to make sure it is clean. But there are uncertain conditions that may change the amount of chemicals required e.g. additional rainfall, thereby requiring that the plant has a precise dose-controlled system. Meanwhile, the hardware devices have to withstand the severe operating conditions for this purification steps due to a 24-hour operation.

Secondly, the distribution reservoirs are constructed on a hill which is not only difficult to supply power to but also has a wiring problem. Therefore, the plant wanted to adopt a wireless system to monitor thewater level of the reservoirs and use solar panels to resolve the power shortage issue consequently the monitoring devices have to have a GPRS connection and consume little power to meet the water plant’s needs. As for the pipelines, the most dangerous thing is the pipes bursting because of high pressure. Therefore, the control center needs to collect the pressure data to ensure the pipes remain in optimum condition. In addition, such monitoring systems will be placed in outdoor cabinets which may cause a temperature issue so hardware products have to meet the tough environmental requirements as well.

System Description
Regarding this case, Advantech provided a total solution with distributed architecture to meet the purposes of stable operations. There are three major systems to monitor and control the water supply procedure: dose-control system, reservoir water-level monitoring system, and pipeline monitoring system.

The first system is for dose control. Advantech provided the APAX-5520KW to connect to various I/O modules via Ethernet to control the dosages which enable engineers to fully master the system’s conditions. As for the IO modules, an APAX-5017 monitors the dose tank level; an APAX-5028 controls a dosing pump; an APAX-5040 and APAX-5046 are individually responsible for the digital signals (input and output) of the pump status, and an ADAM-4117 is used to acquire the untreated water flow rate data. After that, the flow rate can be converted intoacumulative amount, which can be stored for future use.

The second system is for distribution reservoirs. By using the robust ADAM-4117 analog input module – with Advantech’s EKI-1322 GPRS serial device server, ADAM-4572 gateway, and EKI-7626C switch to acquire the water level, this solution not only transmits the instant data to control center in the water supply plant, but also eliminates the wiring problem and power shortage issues because those Advantech’s wireless products are low power usage. Meanwhile, another APAX-5520KW in the plant can control water inflow. When the reservoirs’ water-level is too high, the controller will shut down the pump that delivers water to tanks.

The pipeline management is the third system which includes an APAX-5520KW and APAX-5017 to collect pressure data as well as using an APAX-5040 to detect the cabinet’s door status to ensure the door is closed and the devices are working properly. In accordance with Taiwan’shot and humid sub-tropical climate, Advantech’s products support wide operating temperature range (-10~60°C) and relative humidity between 5~95% to guarantee a steady operation when used outside.

Conclusion
As the saying goes, the right approach saves effort and leads to better results. With Advantech’s total solution, the water supply plant successfully implemented an efficient solution with stable operation to manage its water supply process. From the dosing control system to the wireless application, Advantech’s products not only fit its requirements, but won the customer’s trust.

Additionally, unlike the centralized network structure, Advantech’s solution can provide more stability. Any subsystem failure won’t affect others because Advantech offers the distributed architecture to ensure continuity of operation in such abnormal event. Furthermore, all of Advantech’s products have the low-power feature and support the industrial-grade specification to meet hash environment needs.

Although the entire water supply system is complicated, the customer no longer needs to worry about the system compatibility as the entire systems products are provided by Advantech to ensure the best performance. Certainly, the plant saves a lot of manpower and resources through this total solution.
